About MarkdownPreview.net
MarkdownPreview.net is a free online tool for reading, writing, and checking Markdown. It exists for the moments when you need to see a .md file rendered properly — a README before you push it, a doc someone sent you, a diagram or equation you are not sure about — without installing an editor or signing up for anything.
How it works
The whole app runs in your browser. When you type or open a file, the text is converted to HTML on your own device, and nothing is uploaded to our servers. Share links work by compressing the document into the link itself. The details are in our privacy policy.
We aim to render Markdown the way GitHub does, using GitHub Flavored Markdown plus GitHub’s alert, Mermaid, and math extensions. Because GitHub’s own renderer is not available as a library, small differences remain — for example GitHub typesets math with MathJax while we use KaTeX. When exact output matters, do a final check on github.com.
Built on open source
- marked — Markdown and GitHub Flavored Markdown parsing
- KaTeX — LaTeX math rendering
- Mermaid — diagrams from text
- highlight.js — code syntax highlighting
- CodeMirror — the source editor
- DOMPurify — sanitizing rendered HTML so shared documents cannot run scripts
- Turndown — turning edits made in the preview back into Markdown
Our guides
The guides cover problems people run into with Markdown: previewing it in VS Code or a browser, and fixing READMEs that don’t render on GitHub. Each guide shows when it was last updated, and we revise them when GitHub or the tools they describe change behavior.
