Your documents stay in your browser

Everything you type, paste, or open in the editor is parsed and rendered by JavaScript running in your own browser tab. Files you open or drag in are read locally with the browser’s FileReader API. MarkdownPreview.net is a static website with no accounts, no database, and no upload endpoint, so your document content is never sent to or stored on our servers.

To protect you from losing work, the editor autosaves your current document in your browser’s local storage on this device. It is never uploaded. Clearing the editor, clearing your browser’s site data, or using a private window removes or prevents the saved draft.

Share links

When you create a share link, your Markdown is compressed and stored in the link itself, after the# symbol (the URL fragment). Browsers do not send the fragment to web servers, so no copy is kept anywhere. Anyone who has the link can read the document, so share it only with people who should see the content.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit and which pages they use. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies and collects information such as the pages you visit, approximate location, browser and device type, and referring site. It does not receive the contents of your documents.

When you open a share link, Google Analytics is not loaded at all for that page view, because the document is part of the URL. You can also opt out with your browser’s tracking protection, a content blocker, or the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Google’s use of this data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.

Local storage

The site stores two kinds of data in your browser’s local storage. Neither ever leaves your device:

  • Your theme choice (light or dark).
  • An autosaved draft for each editor page (the document text, its file name, and when it was saved). Opening a share link does not overwrite your draft unless you edit the shared document.

To delete drafts, clear the editor or clear this site’s data in your browser settings.

Third-party services your browser may contact

  • GitHub (raw.githubusercontent.com and api.github.com) — only when you use the GitHub Markdown Preview fetch bar. Your browser requests the README or file directly from GitHub.
  • Image and badge hosts — if your document contains images (for example shields.io badges), your browser loads them from wherever they are hosted, as it would on any web page.
  • jsDelivr and cdnjs — exported HTML files and the PDF print view link to public stylesheets for GitHub-style, math, and code formatting.
  • Hosting provider — like any website, our host processes standard request data (such as IP address and browser user agent) to deliver pages and protect against abuse.
