How to Open & Preview Markdown in Google Docs and Drive

Google Drive and Docs now handle .md files natively, on top of the import, export, and paste features Docs added in 2022 and 2024. Which one you want depends on whether you only need to read the file, edit it and keep it as Markdown, or turn it into a normal document.

Quick answer

To read it: in Google Drive, right-click the .md file → Open with → Preview. To edit it as Markdown: double-click the file to open it in Docs’ “Markdown mode”; it stays a .md file. To turn it into a Doc: right-click → Open with → Google Docs.

Don’t see those options yet? The native support began rolling out on October 5, 2026 and can take up to 15 days to reach every account. Meanwhile, MarkdownPreview.net previews any .md file in your browser.

Preview a .md file in Google Drive

  1. 1Open Google Drive and right-click the .md file.
  2. 2Choose Open with → Preview.
  3. 3At the top of the viewer, switch between Markdown and Preview.

Google says the rendered preview shows clickable links and structured tables. Nothing is converted — the file is only displayed.

Edit a .md file in Docs (Markdown mode)

  1. 1Upload the .md file to Google Drive.
  2. 2Double-click it. It opens in Google Docs with an .md tag next to the title.
  3. 3Edit as you would any Doc. Real-time collaboration and comments work without changing the file type.

The file is not converted: it stays a .md file in Drive, and Docs acts as an editor that shows the final formatting. You can share it from Docs, and comments and formatting are preserved when it is reopened in Docs or other tools.

Convert a .md file to a Google Doc

This is the older route, available since 2024, and it’s useful when you want a regular Document:

  1. 1Upload the file to Drive, right-click it, and choose Open with → Google Docs.
  2. 2Or, inside Docs, choose File → Open → Upload and select the file.

Google’s own announcement says converting used to alter formatting, strip comments, and fragment files — which is why Markdown mode exists. Choose this route only when you actually want a Doc.

Paste and copy Markdown in a Doc

  1. 1In a Doc, open Tools → Preferences and tick Enable Markdown.
  2. 2Copy your Markdown, right-click in the Doc, and choose Paste from Markdown.
  3. 3To go the other way, select text, right-click, and choose Copy as Markdown.

Google’s help page lists these as supported: headings (# to ######, with a space after), italic, bold, bold-italic, strikethrough (~), and links ([text](url)). Tables, fenced code blocks, and images aren’t described there.

Need tables, code, and diagrams to carry over? Paste your Markdown into MarkdownPreview.net, check it looks right, choose Export → Copy Rich Text, and paste normally into the Doc.

Download a Doc as Markdown

  1. 1In the Doc, choose File → Download → Markdown (.md).

To preview the downloaded file anywhere, see how to open an .md file.

What changes when you edit in Docs

Google’s help article warns that editing a .md file in Docs may:

  • turn smart chips into text or links,
  • change web (HTML) formatting to plain text, and
  • remove font colors, highlights, and text alignment.

If something looks wrong afterwards, use File → Version history to restore an earlier version. For files where exact Markdown matters — a README, for example — keep your Markdown in a Markdown editor and use Docs for review.

What Google does not document

We found no statement in Google’s announcements or help pages about any of these, so check them on your own files before relying on them:

  • Which Markdown features Markdown mode does not support.
  • How tables, code blocks, and images are handled when you edit.
  • Mermaid diagrams and LaTeX math.
  • A file-size limit for .md files.

For Mermaid and math, a dedicated previewer is the safer route: see our Mermaid preview and LaTeX math preview.

Troubleshooting

I don't see "Preview" or Markdown mode for my .md file

The feature began rolling out on October 5, 2026 and can take up to 15 days to appear. There is no admin control or user setting to turn it on, so the only options are to wait or to use another method from the table above.

"Paste from Markdown" is missing from the right-click menu

Turn on Tools → Preferences → Enable Markdown in the Doc first. Google's help page says the paste and copy commands depend on it.

The pasted Markdown still shows # and ** symbols

Docs only converts the syntax Google lists: headings need a space after the #, and links can't have a space between ] and (. For anything else, render it first in a Markdown previewer and paste as rich text.

My Mermaid diagram or equation appears as text

Google doesn't document support for either. Render the file in MarkdownPreview.net and paste the rich-text result, or export the diagram as an image.

How we verified this guide

Every step and statement here comes from Google’s own Workspace Updates posts and Google Docs Help articles, listed under Sources and checked on the date shown at the top. We have not tested Markdown mode on every account type, because the feature is still rolling out.

The 2022 post describes a setting called “Automatically detect Markdown”; Google’s current help page shows an “Enable Markdown” checkbox, so we use the current name. Spot something out of date? Email hello@markdownpreview.net.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Docs open .md files?

Yes. Since a rollout that began on October 5, 2026, you can double-click a .md file in Google Drive to edit it in Docs' "Markdown mode" without converting it, and right-click → Open with → Preview to read it rendered. Before that, Docs could import a .md file by converting it to a regular Google Doc.

How do I preview a Markdown file in Google Drive?

Right-click the .md file, choose Open with → Preview, and use the switch at the top of the viewer to move between the "Markdown" source and the rendered "Preview". Google says the preview shows clickable links and structured tables.

Is there a setting or admin control for Markdown mode?

No. Google states there is no admin control for the feature, and the help article lists no user setting. It is rolling out gradually, and Google says it can take up to 15 days from October 5, 2026 to become visible for everyone.

Does Google Docs render Mermaid diagrams or math from Markdown?

Google does not document support for either. If your file contains Mermaid diagrams or LaTeX math, preview it in a tool built for them — MarkdownPreview.net renders both — and use Copy Rich Text to move the rendered result into Docs.

How do I paste Markdown into Google Docs and keep the formatting?

Turn on Tools → Preferences → Enable Markdown, copy the Markdown, right-click in the Doc, and choose "Paste from Markdown". Google's help page lists headings, italic, bold, bold-italic, strikethrough, and links as supported. Alternatively, render the Markdown in MarkdownPreview.net, choose Export → Copy Rich Text, and paste normally.

How do I save a Google Doc as a Markdown file?

Choose File → Download → Markdown (.md). Google added Markdown export, import, and copy/paste support in July 2024.

Will editing a .md file in Docs change my Markdown?

It can. Google warns that editing in Docs may turn smart chips into text or links, change web (HTML) formatting to plain text, and remove font colors, highlights, and text alignment. Use File → Version history to restore an earlier version.
